Trip to the
Matterhorn
A day of repose (December
23, 1999)
Some friends gave us all-day tickets to travel anywhere in
Switzerland on December 23. We decided to go see the Matterhorn
near the small town of Zermat. (about a 4 hour train ride from
Neuchatel)
The first picture is the sunrise over lake Leman, near Montreux.
It's amazing how they built this mountian, almost as good as the
real thing at Disneyland!

Zermat is a quaint little town with nice views of the Matterhorn,
when there are no clouds...
To keep pollution down from all the tourists, all cars and buses
are electric powered.

We couldn't help but take note of the ancient Swiss way of
keeping rats out of grain and food storage. We'll have to
remember that idea when we are in Africa!

After visiting Zermat we took the train around to Brig then spent
the evening in Thun. In Thun there was a free organ concert and
Christmas story at the Reformed church. When we walked into the
church we were amazed by the 20ft tall pine decorated with
burning candles. After singing some Christmas songs the church
invited us to have some hot spiced wine and a bag of nuts. It was
a great cultural experience and we enjoyed the Christmas
atmosphere. Maybe English Christmas songs are closer to German
than to French traditions.
